When the school year ends, the doors to two Upper Ottawa Valley schools will close for good.

Westmeath and Madawaska public schools will not reopen in the fall, after Renfrew County District School Board trustees voted yesterday (May 31) to go in a new direction.

When school resumes in September, current Westmeath students will be attending Beachburg Public School, while those from Madawaska will become students at Sherwood Public School, which is now located within the expanded Madawaska Valley High School.

Trustees approved the staff recommendation for closure, which was based on a number of factors, but mainly because there weren’t enough students enrolled at either of the two schools as per Ministry of Education guidelines.
