Police are investigating a serious assault that took place Thursday afternoon in a wooded area in McNab-Braeside. Shortly after 3 p.m. yesterday Renfrew County Paramedics were called to treat an injured person in the bush on Gunsmith Road. Once they arrived, the first responders called in the Renfrew OPP and officers found a woman with critical injuries. She was taken to hospital as was a man at the scene, who was treated for a medical condition. Charges are pending against the man. The Renfrew County Crime Unit is leading the investigation with assistance from the Forensic Identification Services Unit. We’ll bring you more details when they are available.

Two Petawawa residents are now facing a long list of charges including drugs and weapons, after police executed a search warrant yesterday. The OPP along with special crime unit and drug officers followed through on warrants to search a residence and vehicle on Gerald Avenue on September 13th and they seized firearms including a pistol and long guns … various types of drugs … drug paraphernalia … ammunition … power tools, jewellery and building supplies. Tyler Gates age 33 and 30-year-old Felicia Valiquette have been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine … methamphetamine … and marijuana … as well as eight weapons charges and possession of stolen property. Both will be back in Pembroke Court in November to face all the charges.

Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated 11 domestic disputes during the past week. One female was charged with assault, one male was charged with assault, possession of cocaine and 2 counts of breach of probation and one male was charged with 2 counts of breach of an undertaking. If you or someone you know is living in or involved in an abusive relationship police want you to know that help is available. You can contact Bernadette McCann House 24/7 for support, advice or the safety of a shelter … at 1-800-267-4930. The Women’s Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County is also available 24/7 for information and support … at 1-800-663-3060. You could also attend the emergency department of any Renfrew County hospital and ask to speak to a member of the Assault Response Team. In emergencies you should call 9-1-1.

If you are interested in rolling up your sleeve and making a donation … you can do so Tuesday, September 18th at the Petawawa Civic Centre … from 1 to 4 p.m. … and again from 5:30 to 7:30. Then … on Thursday the 20th … there’s a clinic in Almonte at the Civitan Club … from 2 to 4 p.m. … and from 5 to 8. Officials from Canadian Blood Services say there is a critical need for donations at the moment.  Drop-ins are accepted at all clinics … but you are encouraged to make an appointment by visiting


The Kars Aces came up big last night as pitcher Cory Alkerton allowed only three hits in leading his team to a 4-1 win over West Carleton Electric in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League opening playoff round. Alkerton pitched all seven innings striking out 12 along the way … to pick up the win. He also helped his own cause with a pair of hits and an RBI. Andy Barber was solid on the mound for Fitzroy but a three-run fifth inning was the difference. Up next, Kars will face Quyon next … as both teams won their openers while West Carleton will take on the Ottawa Valley A’s. The winner of that game will move on, while the loser will be eliminated. We’ll bring you game days and times when they’re available.

The CCHL weekend action gets underway tonight … and both local hockey teams are in action. The Carleton Place Canadians are in Rockland  and Pembroke visits Navan. On Sunday afternoon Carleton Place hosts Rockland in the second half of a home-and-home. That one goes at 3 o’clock. And on Sunday night Pembroke plays host to Kemptville. Puck drop at the PMC is set for 7.

AND … the CCHL-2 regular season gets underway this weekend and Arnprior is the place to be as the Nick Smith Centre will play host to the season-opening Showcase. All four local teams are in action as the hometown Packers face Embrun tonight at 7:30. On Saturday, Renfrew squares off with Ottawa West at 10:30 a.m. Carleton Place meets Winchester at 11 Whitewater faces Ottawa at 4:30 and the Packers are back in action against Richmond at 7:30. The action continues Sunday … with Whitewater and Alexandria battling at 1:30 … Carleton Place and Casselman meeting at 4:30 and Renfrew wrapping things up with Char-Lan at 5 o’clock.
