When we buy a lottery ticket … we all dream about winning the jackpot … but never really think it will happen to us. Well … a Braeside woman recently bought a Bigger Spin ticket … and she did win the jackpot … taking home $650,000. Gina Barriault initially thought she’d only won 10 or 20 dollars … but when she had her ticket checked at the store … it was a bigger prize. Much bigger. She had to go to Toronto … to actually spin a big lottery wheel … one that looks like the big wheel on the Price Is Right. She spun it Thursday morning and it landed on a giant windfall. The retired support service worker says travelling is near the top of her to-do list now and has also said she may buy a boat, a new truck, and help out her family. The 54-year-pld mother of two … and grandmother of five … bought her winning ticket at the Circle K on Madawaska in Arnprior.

It’s the Thanksgiving Long Weekend and that means family, friends and food. But it also means that the OPP will be out in full force on area roads and highways … watching for drivers who are speeding, impaired, distracted or not wearing their seatbelts. Operation Impact … a four-day blitz … begins today and runs through holiday Monday so police are warning people to not drink and drive, watch their speed, put their cell phones away and buckle up. All standard driving rules, but the OPP say those four problems have led to the deaths of 156 people across the province so far this year. Police want you to enjoy the weekend and arrive alive to spend time with your family and friends.

Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated seven domestic disputes during the past week … and one male was charged with overcoming resistance by choking and spousal assault. If you or someone you know is living in or involved in an abusive relationship … police want you to know that help is available. You can contact Bernadette McCann House 24/7 for support, advice or the safety of a shelter … at 1-800-267-4930. The Women’s Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County is also available 24/7 for information and support … at 1-800-663-3060. You could also attend the emergency department of any Renfrew County hospital and ask to speak to a member of the Assault Response Team. In emergencies you should call 9-1-1.

AND … If you are a blood donor … and want to give the Gift of Life … you can do so next Tuesday at a blood donor clinic in Pembroke. If you are interested in rolling up your sleeve and making a donation … you can do so October 9th … from 1 to 7:30 p.m. … at the Germania Club. Officials from Canadian Blood Services say there is always a need for donations in the fall months.  Drop-ins are accepted at the Pembroke clinic but you are encouraged to make an appointment by visiting www.blood.ca

AND IN SPORTS …

After a hot start to the CCHL season, the Pembroke Lumber Kings have certainly cooled down. Pembroke fell to Kanata 3-1 last night, their fourth straight loss. Pembroke fell behind 2-0 after the first period and couldn’t get back in the game. Malcolm Arseneau scored the lone Lumber Kings goal while Darian McTavish stopped 31 shots in the Pembroke net. The Lumber Kings are back in action tonight, on the road in Hawkesbury. It’s their only game of the weekend.

The Carleton Place Canadians are in action on Sunday and Monday as they are in Nepean on Thanksgiving Day … and are at home holiday Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock … hosting Cornwall.

in the CCHL-2 this weekend the Renfrew Timberwolves are at home tonight hosting Casselman at 8 o’clock then they’re on the road Saturday night … heading down the highway to Cobden to take on the Whitewater Kings. That one goes at 7:30. And the Arnprior Packers have two games … one tonight in Westport … and then tomorrow afternoon at the Nick Smith Centre when Alexandria comes to town. Puck drop in that one is 1 o’clock.
