It was a full house yesterday afternoon at the Kinburn Community Centre as close to 300 people turned out some as early as two hours before the doors opened … for Valley Heritage Radio’s Charity Fundraising Country Dance. With all proceeds earmarked to help those in the area who were devastated by the recent tornadoes  the people of the Ottawa Valley responded in first-class fashion as more than $16,000 was raised in four hours. The theme of the day was “Neighbours Helping Neighbhours” and that’s exactly what happened as dozens of volunteers lent their services to the cause including a star-studded lineup of musicians who kept the dance floor packed. The Board … management … staff … and volunteers of Valley Heritage Radio want to sincerely thank everyone who contributed to this amazing event and helped show true Ottawa Valley spirit and support to those who needed a helping hand in the wake of the tornadoes that have impacted the lives of our friends and neighbours.

Last week we reported on stories about items being stolen from parked cars and people stealing gasoline at local stations. And once again … these types of crimes are in the news. The Renfrew OPP are reminding people to make sure they hide any valuables and lock their vehicles while parked because on October 6th … sometime between 7 and 9:30 p.m. someone stole a wallet and purse, which included ID, bank and credit cards, along with cash from an unlocked vehicle at the Renfrew Armouries. And … on October 7th … at just before 1:30 in the afternoon, a man driving a white Ford truck pumped gas into the vehicle then drove off westbound on O’Brien Road. Police are continuing to investigate. If you have information … you are asked to call the Renfrew OPP.

AND … If you are a blood donor and want to give the Gift of Life, you can do Saturday at a blood donor clinic in Carleton Place. If you are interested in rolling up your sleeve and making a donation, you can do so October 20th … from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. … at the Neelin Street Community Centre. Officials from Canadian Blood Services say there is a critical need for donations.  Drop-ins are accepted at the Pembroke clinic but you are encouraged to make an appointment by visiting www.blood.ca
