If you remember, in late March we brought you a report of a break, enter and assault on a homeowner on Round Lake Road in Laurentian Valley. Well … the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP have arrested and charged the man responsible for the March 27th incident. Kevin Garfield John … 59 … of Pembroke is looking at charges of aggravated assault … arson … and robbery with violence. Police say that on the date in question around 9:30 p.m, the owner of the house returned home and was assaulted by John who’d broken into the residence. The homeowner sustained serious injuries in the assault. The man then stole the victim’s vehicle, fleeing the scene. The burned vehicle was found a short time later on Round Lake Road. John was arrested October 10th and remains in custody, pending a bail hearing today. Police investigators believe the incident was not random in nature and the OPP is not looking for any other suspects at this time. There are no known public safety concern.

Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated 12 domestic disputes during the past week. One male was charged with assault one female was charged with 2 counts of assault … and one male was charged with uttering threats and resisting arrest. If you or someone you know is living in or involved in an abusive relationship … police want you to know that help is available. You can contact Bernadette McCann House 24/7 for support, advice or the safety of a shelter … at 1-800-267-4930. The Women’s Sexual Assault Centre of Renfrew County is also available 24/7 for information and support … at 1-800-663-3060. You could also attend the emergency department of any Renfrew County hospital and ask to speak to a member of the Assault Response Team. In emergencies you should call 9-1-1.

The roadwork in Renfrew has led to a number of detours throughout the summer and now the fall. And we have another road closure to tell you about but this is for only a few hours. Tomorrow … Saturday the 13th … Raglan Street South from Renfrew Avenue East to Patrick Avenue will be shut down to traffic from 6 to 9 p.m. But this isn’t for construction, it’s due to the Craft Beer and Food Truck Festival. Just give yourself a little more travel time if you’re heading around town.

AND … just a reminder that Valley Heritage Radio, along with community partners is organizing a fundraising dance to help those hit hardest by the recent tornadoes in the Ottawa Valley. It will be held this Sunday October 14th  from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Kinburn Community Centre. Make sure to circle it on your calendar because on that day, every dollar raised will be put back into the community to help those in need. Among the musicians on the bill are Neville Wells … the Rogers Family … Jamie McMunn … Lauren Hall … Johnny Spinks … Arlene Quinn … Kyle Felhaver … Pauline Brown & The Canadian Steppers … Mike Cloutier … and Andy Williams. Along with a wonderful house band featuring Darrell Mooney … Tim Hermitte … Dennis Harrington … John Steele … Rick Leben … and Jack Jones. There will also be live and silent auctions … a light lunch … and a big dance floor. There are no advanced tickets for this one it’ll be first-come, first-serve at the door. Doors open at 1 o’clock.


In high school girls’ basketball action yesterday … RCI picked up wins over Valour in both junior and senior. Olivia Smart led the junior Raiders with 19 points in a 41-23 win while the RCI seniors beat Valour 69-22. Maggie Scott led all scorers with 28 points.

In the CCHL this weekend … the Pembroke Lumber Kings will be looking to break their five-game losing skid but it’ll be a tough go as they have a home-and-home series with the 10-and-1 Brockville Braves. Pembroke is in Brockville tonight, then host the Braves Sunday afternoon. Game time at the PMC will be 3 o’clock. And the first-place Carleton Place Canadians have a pair of games at home. Tonight Ottawa is in for a 7:45 start and on Sunday at 3:00, Hawkesbury is in town at 3.

AND … in the CCHL-2  tonight all three local teams are in action as Arnprior hosts Casselman and Char-Lan is in Renfrew. Both of those games go at 8 o’clock. Also tonight … the Whitewater Kings are on the road in Westport for the first half of a home-and-home set. They’re home Saturday night to the Rideaus. Puck drop in that one is 7:30 at the Cobden arena. Also on Saturday Renfrew is in Athens.
