A Laurentian Valley Township man who was helping in the recovery effort of a plane on the Ottawa River has died. Fifty-six-year-old John Beevis was diving to secure the plane when he became entangled in a rope and was unable to surface. A call was placed to 9-1-1 and others on scene made attempts to reach him but were unsuccessful. This happened on the morning of May 26th around 11 o’clock. The previous evening around 6:30 p.m. a small private plane had lost power after departing the Deep River airport and the pilot was forced to make an emergency landing on the water near Balmer Bay. The 49-year-old pilot sustained minor injuries and was able to swim safely to shore. The investigation is ongoing.
The OPP in Arnprior are investigating two break-ins that happened in town during the past week. On May 22nd … sometime between 1 and 3:30 p.m. … someone entered a John Street South home by forcing open a window and reaching inside to unlock the back door. Once inside the thief stole jewelry and sterling silver cutlery. And sometime between 12 noon on May 18th … and 9 o’clock the following morning someone broke into a garage on Arthur Street and made off with three Makita hand tools valued at $450. It’s not believed the garage was locked … as there was no sign of forced entry. Anyone with information on either of these incidents is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
AND … If you live around Mansfield-et-Pontefract and Fort Colounge you need to know that personnel from Garrison Petawawa will be conducting training in the area of Davidson Mill … from June 1st to the 6th. Residents may notice military aircraft and vehicles uniformed military personnel with weapons and hear noises associated with explosives and personal weapons. Please note that from the 4th to the 5th the training will occur during the night and into the early morning and residents may notice noises associated with explosives. The military advises that all efforts will be made to ensure that disruption to the community will be at a minimum.

The Renfrew County high school soccer champions have been crowned. In junior girls, St Joseph’s from Renfrew beat Jeanne Lajoie 1-0 in the title game while Bishop Smith topped St. Joe’s 2-1 to win the junior boys’ title. In senior action … Arnprior beat Valour 2-1 in overtime in the girls’ championship and the boys’ County title goes to Mackenzie who beat ADHS 2-1 in the final.
AND … the expansion Vegas Golden Knights drew first blood in the Stanley Cup Finals last night as Vegas beat the Washington Capitals 6-4 in Game 1. Game 2 of the series goes Wednesday night at 8.
