The Ottawa Valley Tourist Association recently celebrated some of the area’s top tourism-minded people at its annual conference and AGM in Renfrew. Among the special awards handed out were the Marilyn Alexander Tourism Champion Award … given to Bob Peltzer from Bonnechere Valley. The Whitewater Brewing Company earned the Business of Distinction Award and the Special Event of the Year was the Upper Ottawa River Race and Paddle Festival. Also at the AGM … Chris Hinsperger of the Bonnechere Caves was elected president of the OVTA … and Arlene Jamieson of Venture Interiors was elected VP. Looking around the room at his fellow association members … the president said they are a great team of motivated people … whose ideas … experience and pride in the region’s tourism offerings make them great ambassadors in welcoming Canada and the world to the Valley.
Police always encourage anyone who sees a potential impaired driver to call the OPP and that’s exactly what happened on the weekend resulting in the arrest of someone who’d been drinking and driving. On May 12th … just before 8 p.m. … Arnprior OPP officers got a call that a car was swerving all over the road almost striking multiple vehicles. This was on the White Lake Road near Arnprior. Police located the vehicle and the 69-year-old driver from Arnprior was stopped. He refused to give breath samples and was then charged with impaired driving and also charged for his refusal to cooperate. He was released on a promise to appear and will be in Renfrew Court on May 30th. The OPP say that if you see anyone who you suspect is driving drunk to call police immediately.
An investigation continues in Petawawa after the Upper Ottawa Valley were called to a house yesterday where a man had barricaded himself and refused to come out. The Emergency Response Team was deployed and a member of the East Region Crisis Negotiation Team was also on scene. After four hours … a 54-year-old man exited the house and was taken into custody without incident.

The second week of Greater Ottawa Fastball League sees four games on the schedule … including a rivalry game tonight between West Carleton Electric and Carp. That one goes in Fitzroy at 8:30. Tomorrow the Micksburg Twins travel to Manotick to play Kars … and Wednesday Stittsville hosts Quyon. And the week’s action wraps up in Carp on Thursday night … as the Ottawa Valley A’s host Kars.
At the RBC Cup in Chilliwack, BC … the CCHL champion Ottawa Junior Senators have a 1-and-1 record … after beating Wellington 2-1 in overtime … before losing 4-3 in OT to the host team. Ottawa now plays the Wentachee Wild from BC today in their third game.
AND … in the NHL playoffs last night, Vegas beat Winnipeg 3-1 to even that series at one game apiece. And the Washington Capitals return home tonight with a 2-0 series lead over Tampa Bay in the East Final. Game 3 is set for 8 o’clock.
