An abandoned farm silo near Ashton burned down early this morning. Firefighters from Mississippi Mills Carleton Place and the City of Ottawa were called to the blaze just before 5 o’clock this morning. The silo was completely engulfed when firefighters arrived. No one was injured in the fire which was on Ashton Station Road just north of Highway 7.


A two-day benefit put on by a Pembroke country music singer saw a record amount of money brought in as $100,000 will be going to local agencies and organizations thanks to the 5th annual Jason Blaine Night with the Stars Gala and Celebrity Charity Golf Classic. Every year the amount of money the benefit pulls in has grown … as the inaugural year in 2014  saw it raise $50,000. Last year that number had jumped to 90-thousand … bringing its 4-year total to $300,000. Over that span, money has been donated to the Pembroke and Area Boys’ and Girls’ Club … the Pembroke Regional Hospital’s MRI campaign … Algonquin College … the Pembroke Legion … and many other organizations throughout his hometown.


Despite all the statistics on how dangerous impaired driving is and that lives are at risk every time a drunk driver climbs behind the wheel people continue to do just that. On June 5th  around 5 p.m. Renfrew OPP officers were called to check a suspicious vehicle that was parked and idling on Harry Street. Officers found the female driver had been drinking and she was arrested for impaired control of a motor vehicle. More breath tests were performed at the detachment and she was charged. The 36-year-old Renfrew woman will be in court on July 4th.


AND … Arnprior and Renfrew officers investigated six domestic disputes during the past week. One male was charged with two counts of assault. No other criminal offences were alleged. AND IN SPORTS …

There are four games on tap this week in the Greater Ottawa Fastball League … with things kicking off Tuesday night in Fitzroy Harbour … with West Carleton Electric hosting the Ottawa Valley A’s at 8:30. On Wednesday … Kars is in Stitsville at 9. And there are a pair of games on Thursday … as Quyon hosts Carp at 7:30 … and the Ottawa Valley A’s are in Micksburg to face the Twins. That game goes at 8 o’clock.

AND … with the NHL draft just around the corner … Montreal Canadiens GM Mark Bergevin has given Habs fans something to talk about in the days leading up to the dr0aft. The Canadiens acquired Max Domi from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for Alex Galchenyuk on Friday essentially swapping two under-achieving young forwards. The Habs then signed the 23-year-old Domi to a two-year deal. The NHL draft is set for Friday night in Dallas. Montreal picks third overall … and Arizona has the fifth pick. Sandwiched in between are the Ottawa Senators who’ll choose fourth.
