The Ottawa Valley is bracing for another deep freeze as Environment Canada has placed the region under another Special Weather Statement as a cold snap is expected to start tonight and run through the weekend. After more than a week of frigid temperatures we found two days of relief when the mercury climbed to make it feel more seasonal. But that will end later today as Jack Frost makes his return. We’re expected to hit at least minus-30 tonight with the wind and again Friday night into Saturday. Saturday night will also be wickedly cold but it’s expected to break on Sunday when it will become more bearable at minus-9. So bundle up and make sure your pets are brought inside.
The Renfrew OPP have a couple of break-ins to tell you about and are hoping the public can give information to help with the investigations. The first was a garage on Calabogie Road in Greater Madawaska when the owner noticed that someone broke the lock and a Jiffy gas-powered ice auger. That happened sometime between December 20th and 21st. Then sometime between December 28th and 29th someone broke into the Carswell Alley and Gallery on Carswell Street in Arnprior. A screen was cut … and a window open to gain access. Once inside … the thief stole a quantity of cash and merchandise. Anyone with information in either case is asked to contact police.
AND … With the Christmas season now in the rear-view mirror … the decorations are coming down and that includes the tree. If you live in the Upper Ottawa Valley and are wondering what to do with your old Christmas tree you should know that trees will be collected in Petawawa and Laurentian Valley during the week of January 8th on your regular collection day. If you live in Pembroke Christmas trees will be collected on January 8th only. You also need to know that trees must be free from all lights and decorations and you shouldn’t put them in a plastic bag or in your green cart. No artificial trees will be picked up. If you prefer you can also drop your tree off at the Ottawa Valley Waste Recovery Centre during the month of January. There’s no charge for this. To find out more … you can visit www.ovwrc.com
