A flash freeze warning is in effect for our area and much of Ontario today– Temperatures are forecast to fall rapidly this afternoon.  Ponding water, slush and any falling precipitation will freeze – as the temperature drops.  This is all due to a cold front that will pass through our area this afternoon.  Rain will change to snow and there will be a hard freeze as temperatures plummet.  If you are out on the roads this afternoon, take care as surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous.  Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas.

It didn’t take officers from the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP long to solve a case of a stolen pickup truck. Just a few minutes, actually. On January 10th just after 6:40 in the morning police responded to a report of a stolen pickup truck in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn in Pembroke. The vehicle had been left running while unattended and it was stolen. Then within minutes of stealing the vehicle the suspect drove it back into the parking lot and was arrested. A 27-year-old Laurentian Hills man has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle; failure to appear in court; possession of property obtained by crime; and also faces outstanding charges of driving while impaired by drugs; and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. These are in connection to a collision in early December. He will remain in custody until his court appearance on January 17th.

A Wednesday afternoon crash in the Upper Ottawa Valley is laced with a twist of irony. On January 9th … just before 3:30 p.m. … the Killaloe OPP were called to a single-vehicle collision on Queen Street in Killaloe, Hagarty and Richards Township. A passenger car struck the side of the LCBO building and a 70-year-old man from the township was charged with having open liquor in a public place and was issued a three-day driver’s license suspension related to alcohol. He was unhurt but the vehicle and the LCBO store were both damaged.

On January 3rd Renfrew OPP responded to a call of a theft from a home on Stewartville Road in McNab-Braeside. Cash and other items were stolen from the home and video evidence showed the thief was a family friend. When confronted regarding the theft the suspect returned the cash but denied stealing anything else. Police began to investigate but stopped when the victim decided they’d deal with the theft without police involvement.

If you live in the Carleton Place area … and are a blood donor … there is a clinic today at St James Anglican Church. If you want to roll up your sleeve you can do so from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Canadian Blood Services officials say there is an urgent need for donations. Drop-ins are always accepted.

AND IN SPORTS …

Two Valley rivals lock horns tonight  as the Renfrew Timberwolves host the Whitewater Kings at Ma-te-Way. Renfrew sits two points up on the Kings in the Richardson Division hanging onto fourth spot.
