The OPP is reporting there has been an increase in reported extortion scams. The scammer will inform the citizen that a video or picture containing explicit sexual content will be made public if they do not pay a fee immediately. In an attempt to scare the targeted people into believing the scam is real … the fraudsters send an email that contains a password that the person is either currently using … or previously used … as proof that they have hacked their computer while they were visiting a pornographic site. The scammer then says that access to the webcam was gained … and all proceedings were recorded. To prevent any humiliation, scammers urge victims to pay a “confidentiality fee” by bitcoin … or the video will be shared with all family members, colleagues and friends. If you receive an email or phone call similar to this … you are asked to call the OPP or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Do not give out any personal information or make payment. This is an extortion scam.
