The local real estate market continues to remain red hot. It’s a seller’s market as inventory is down…prices are up…and home sales are up too. According to the Renfrew County Real Estate Board 157 units got sold last month. When compared to the same time period last year…it’s an increase of 15%. The numbers are quite stunning actually…when compared to July of last year…the average home sold for 13% more this year, as the average price of homes sold in the county was just over 245-thousand dollars. There’s not alot out there either as supply continues to run at multi-year lows. Almost 12% fewer houses are on the market this year when compared to last year. With so many unit’s selling in July, it marks a 6 year high for the month.

Police are asking the public to beware of a popular scam that seems to be popping up in the area once again. In this one, people are being offered false employment opportunities … on job sites … internet ads … through emails … texts … or in newspapers. In some cases if you’ve posted your resume online you may be getting job offers. If you respond to these ads you’re told you’ve gotten the job … and are sent payment by cheque … e-transfer … or other means. You’re then told to deposit it into your bank account … and send a large portion of the money somewhere else … either through pre-paid gift cards … or depositing the money into a bank account … provided to you by the fraudsters. Once you move that money the bank calls to tell you the cheque or e-transfer was fraudulent and your account is overdrawn … or frozen. And your money is gone. Police want to remind the public never to send money to anyone you don’t know … or trust.

AND IN SPORTS …

Smiths Falls’ Brooke Henderson had a great opening round at the CP Women’s Open in Regina … as the 20-year-old fired a 6-under par round of 66 … and sits two shots off the lead. She had eight birdies … and two bogeys … for her best start at the Canadian championship in her career. It’s her seventh Women’s Open on home soil … her first coming when she was just 14 years old. Last year … in Ottawa … Henderson tied for 17th … her best finish at the Canadian Open.

Local hockey fans who’ve been waiting for action to return to the ice … can see two old rivals meet tonight … as the Arnprior Packers host the Renfrew Timberwolves in CCHL-2 exhibition action. Puck drop is at 7:30 … and it only costs 5 bucks to get in. No charge for anyone under 13.

Matt Greer had the win for the home team, with relief from Todd Hearty. Brenden Hennessy threw for the Twins … and had relief from Matt McIntyre.  Steve McCord and Zach Trudeau had home runs for the Flyers … while Quinton Rook had a big night at the plate for Micksburg … going 3-for-4 with two home runs and a double.
