About the event

Michael McBane retired from his position as director with the Canadian Health Coalition and was the first recipient of the annual Social Justice Award presented by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. He is the author of two books that explore the history of the Irish in the Ottawa Valley – Bytown 1847: Élisabeth Bruyère & the Irish Famine Refugees and John Egan: Pine & Politics in the Ottawa Valley. He recently convinced Ottawa city council to install a monument to the Irish Famine refugees in Macdonald Gardens Park in the city’s Lowertown. The monument will feature a pair of bronze shoes from Ireland that signify the hopeful journey and flight from the famine. Similar monuments have been placed in other Canadian cities to commemorate Irish emigration in our country. It is part of the Global Irish Famine Way initiative.

The Bromley Historical Society is honoured to welcome Michael McBane and have him share this knowledge on the Irish settlements in the Ottawa Valley. Refreshments will be served following the presentation.
