Police are warning the public of an old phone scam has resurfaced where callers identify themselves as the Canada Revenue Agency. The caller states that the victim owes the government money and that “action” will be taken unless a payment is made immediately. The OPP can confirm that government agencies do not deal with any “owed monies” by phone call or e-mail contact and do not request payment either by prepaid credit cards or gift cards. Officials say the CRA will never threaten arrest or send police. Police say never provide personal, banking, or Social Insurance Number information to any unsolicited calls and never agree to meet any caller. And you need to be aware that scammers can be extremely assertive and aggressive attempting to get this information. Police say the best advice is, “Hang up the phone, hang on to your money.”
