Police are warning the public of an ongoing phone scam where callers identify themselves as the Canada Revenue Agency.
The caller states that the victim owes the government money, and that “action” will be taken unless a payment it is made immediately.
OPP can confirm that government agencies do not deal with any “owed monies” by phone call or e-mail contact, and also confirm that the calls originate from automated call centres.
The scam was active in the 613 area code zone prior to Christmas, and has returned as the criminals once more rotate through auto dialing.
Police say never provide personal, banking, or Social Insurance Number information to any unsolicited calls, and never agree to meet any caller.
Police say the best advice is, “Hang up the phone, hang on to your money.”
