Spring may finally have sprung, and that has police asking people to be smart – and safe – around area lakes and rivers.

Ice is disappearing quickly and that puts people at greater risk of danger if they are ice fishing, walking, or cross country skiing on local frozen waterways.

For all of those activities you need at least four inches of new clear hard ice. For snowmobiles or ATVs you need a minimum of five inches, and that number climbs as the size of the vehicle – and number of vehicles on ice – increases.

According to the OPP, err on the side of caution at this time of year.
